Series: Trinity Blood.
Canon Point: Chapter 54 from the manga.
Reference: Click!
Age: 18 years-old.
Gender: Female.
Suitability: Not applicable.
Appearance: Not applicable.
Background: See manga section.
Personality: Esther can only initially be described as a headstrong young nun who appears to be on a mission. She was raised in the church and has a very strong spiritual basis; Esther sincerely believes in God and calls upon Him for guidance at several points during the manga. Religion gives her a guide for her moral compass, though she does not allow religion to shape her completely.
Upon first meeting Esther, it is easy to assume that she is just a simple nun, kind and gentle. She’s very compassionate and refuses to turn her back on any creature that might need her assistance, Methuselah or not. Esther considers it her duty to protect those weaker than her as seen when she protects the people of Istvan from the “evil” Count Gyula. After joining the Vatican with Father Tres and Father Nightroad, Esther often struggles with her relative weakness compared to that of those around her. While she wants to protect everyone she cares about, she often doesn’t have the physical strength or ability to do so and is forced to rely on others.
Esther is also very strong willed and no-nonsense. As much as she enjoys spending her leisure time (which isn’t much) with those she cares about, when she has a mission to complete that is the only thing on her mind. She can’t understand Father Nightroad’s flippant attitude about things, especially when they have to do with serious matters such as the Vatican or a mission and is quick to put him in his place if she thinks he is being inappropriate.
Despite this aspect of her personality that is very intense and determined, Esther also has an emotional, softer side that happens to be self-sacrificing. When Ion Fortuna is forced to either drink her blood or die, she offers herself to him freely, saying that none of this is his fault and she doesn’t want him to cry anymore – even though it would mean her death. They are both only saved at the last moment by the arrival of Father Nightroad. After Esther’s friend Shahra and Esther herself have been trapped by the manipulations of an evil Archbishop, Shahra sacrifices her life to save Esther and her reputation, and Esther holds her crying, truly mourning the Methuselah that the church have condemned as evil. On several occasions in the manga, Esther is seen to cry freely in front of her companions, for herself and more frequently, for others.
While others often seen the better sides of Esther, her kindness and compassion and care for others around her, Esther doesn’t always see this quality in herself. She doesn’t understand why others idolize and look up to her, because she was “only doing what was right” in her eyes and doing what is right isn’t something that necessarily needs to be recognized. The biggest example is her title “the Lady Saint”. Originally the title was given to her by the town of Istvan in memory of her fighting against the cruel rule of Count Gyula – however, Esther resents this title, especially since her memories of Gyula have no hate, only sadness. When attempts are made by a cruel Archbishop in the town to ruin her reputation, ending in the death of Esther’s friend Shahra, Esther grudgingly accepts the title but refuses to use it to refer to herself or allow any of those close to her to use it. The title bears her guilt for Shahra’s death and seems … cruel, considering.
Esther is also very sensitive to those in her life who she considers to have betrayed her. Dietrich von Lohengrin is the best example of this kind of character, someone who she befriended in her hometown of Istvan and later turned out to be working for the Rosenkreuz Orden, a Methuselah terrorist organization. Despite this betrayal, Esther continually wants to forgive and meet with Dietrich again, though when she does, the situation is never good. Esther believes that all of the people in her life can be redeemed in some way and this frequently leads to more pain for her, and occasionally, some happiness.
For the most part, Esther has extremely good relationships with those around her. She highly esteems His Holiness the Pope, and very much respects (and envies) his sister, the Duchess of Milan. It seems to Esther that the Duchess is everything she desperately wants to be – intelligent, mature, beautiful and strong. Not to mention the Duchess has a relationship with Father Nightroad that she doesn’t completely understand. Speaking of the good Father – Esther has very mixed feelings about him. She enjoys interacting and working with him, as well as spending time with him, but for a time she was also traumatized by his other side – the “Crusnik” that lived inside him. It terrified her that someone so gentle and so kind could be … someone else and something so ruthless. For now, she has made her peace with both aspects of his being and their relationship is (mostly) back to normal; however, it is foreseeable in the future that any interaction with him in his Crusnik form will be very strained.
Esther will be horrified with the type of situation she is thrown into in Country Within a Palace, but the only thing that will throw her for a real loop will be the sexual requirement. Helping those in danger and protecting the weak are things that she is accustomed to, but she has no experience with sex, or any kind of physical relationship with anyone else (it comes with being a nun). She is, however, adaptable and her concern for those who live within the Country in addition to learning that she cannot leave easily will force her to find ways to help, in her own ways. That isn't to say that she'll go running into someone's arms immediately - it will take her time to become comfortable commit any kind of sexual act, which would include breaking her vow of chastity.
Character Powers/Abilities/Skills: Esther is no more or less skilled than an average human being and possesses no magical, supernatural, or technological abilities / powers. She has been told however, that she is very empathetic, understanding and good at inspiring others.
SAMPLES
First Person Sample:
[The girl in the mirror appears to be mostly composed, even if her eyes reflect some panic. Waking up alone, in the sand, being attacked by a strange creature that she’d never seen before – it was something worthy of panic! But she can’t betray her weakness to strangers, if there really are other people here.]
.. My name is Sister Esther Blanchett. U-Um..!
[What do you say at times like this? She knew what she wanted clarified first, however.]
That note. About.. those things? Is that true?! My heart goes out to those who need my help and I am happy to do what I can, but I am not quite sure I am .. the best person for this sort of thing…
[Then, quietly:]
I gave Him a vow.
Third Person Sample:
It was hot.
Rome was very warm in the summer, it was true. But this .. didn’t feel like Rome and it definitely didn’t feel like Londinium. The air wasn’t as damp as it should be. Groaning slightly, Esther opened her eyes and shifted slightly, wincing as her back screamed in protest. It seemed she still wasn’t entirely recovered from the attack.
The attack. The sand. This strange, small room that wasn’t like anything she had at home. Panicking, Esther sat bolt upright and stared at her surroundings, rubbing her forehead. Where ..? The strange woman who had rescued her from that creature had said that Esther had been brought here because they needed her help – she had never been able to turn her back on people in need. That was before she had been told exactly what she had to do to help, however.
Now.. Now, she was in full on “freaking-out” mode. Standing, Esther crossed the room to the gift basket she had received, the note crumpled on top. She’d thought before she went to sleep that if she crumpled up the note, it would change its contents. No such luck.
“I c-can’t! T-Those things are..” Against her vows. Against everything she had been taught. The woman might have asked for her help, but surely she hadn’t been familiar with the traditions of the Catholic Church. Esther had taken a vow.
Horrified, she dropped the note again, intending to turn away and flop back down on the mat she had been sleeping on. Instead she ended up with one hand on a strange mirror that she hadn’t noticed before, eyes drawn to the glass. W-What .. was this feeling? The strange feeling that this mirror was important to her life here – it had hit her, all of a sudden.
Well, things couldn’t get strange. With a shuddering breath in an attempt to calm herself, Esther picked up the mirror and stared into its depths.
