CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Esther Blanchett (the Lady Saint).
SERIES: Trinity Blood.
CANON POINT: Chapter 53 in the manga.
LOSS: Her ability to pray. During times of trouble in the manga, when Esther is at her most lost, she often takes time to pray. This is an important ability for her since it gives her the peace of mind she needs to sort things out and decide what the best course of action would be in the future. In Paradisa, while she will be able to think, while flustered she won’t be able to achieve the same peace of mind prayer would give her and might act more impulsively than usual.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Esther can only initially be described as a headstrong young nun who appears to be on a mission. She was raised in the church and has a very strong spiritual basis; Esther sincerely believes in God and calls upon Him for guidance at several points during the manga. Religion gives her a guide for her moral compass, though she does not allow religion to shape her completely.
Upon first meeting Esther, it is easy to assume that she is just a simple nun, kind and gentle. She’s very compassionate and refuses to turn her back on any creature that might need her assistance, Methuselah or not. Esther considers it her duty to protect those weaker than her as seen when she protects the people of Istvan from the “evil” Count Gyula. After joining the Vatican with Father Tres and Father Nightroad, Esther often struggles with her relative weakness compared to that of those around her. While she wants to protect everyone she cares about, she often doesn’t have the physical strength or ability to do so and is forced to rely on others.
Esther is also very strong willed and no-nonsense. As much as she enjoys spending her leisure time (which isn’t much) with those she cares about, when she has a mission to complete that is the only thing on her mind. She can’t understand Father Nightroad’s flippant attitude about things, especially when they have to do with serious matters such as the Vatican or a mission and is quick to put him in his place if she thinks he is being inappropriate.
Despite this aspect of her personality that is very intense and determined, Esther also has an emotional, softer side that happens to be self-sacrificing. When Ion Fortuna is forced to either drink her blood or die, she offers herself to him freely, saying that none of this is his fault and she doesn’t want him to cry anymore – even though it would mean her death. They are both only saved at the last moment by the arrival of Father Nightroad. After Esther’s friend Shahra and Esther herself have been trapped by the manipulations of an evil Archbishop, Shahra sacrifices her life to save Esther and her reputation, and Esther holds her crying, truly mourning the Methuselah that the church have condemned as evil. On several occasions in the manga, Esther is seen to cry freely in front of her companions, for herself and more frequently, for others.
While others often seen the better sides of Esther, her kindness and compassion and care for others around her, Esther doesn’t always see this quality in herself. She doesn’t understand why others idolize and look up to her, because she was “only doing what was right” in her eyes and doing what is right isn’t something that necessarily needs to be recognized. The biggest example is her title “the Lady Saint”. Originally the title was given to her by the town of Istvan in memory of her fighting against the cruel rule of Count Gyula – however, Esther resents this title, especially since her memories of Gyula have no hate, only sadness. When attempts are made by a cruel Archbishop in the town to ruin her reputation, ending in the death of Esther’s friend Shahra, Esther grudgingly accepts the title but refuses to use it to refer to herself or allow any of those close to her to use it. The title bears her guilt for Shahra’s death and seems … cruel, considering.
Esther is also very sensitive to those in her life who she considers to have betrayed her. Dietrich von Lohengrin is the best example of this kind of character, someone who she befriended in her hometown of Istvan and later turned out to be working for the Rosenkreuz Orden, a Methuselah terrorist organization. Despite this betrayal, Esther continually wants to forgive and meet with Dietrich again, though when she does, the situation is never good. Esther believes that all of the people in her life can be redeemed in some way and this frequently leads to more pain for her, and occasionally, some happiness.
For the most part, Esther has extremely good relationships with those around her. She highly esteems His Holiness the Pope, and very much respects (and envies) his sister, the Duchess of Milan. It seems to Esther that the Duchess is everything she desperately wants to be – intelligent, mature, beautiful and strong. Not to mention the Duchess has a relationship with Father Nightroad that she doesn’t completely understand. Speaking of the good Father – Esther has very mixed feelings about him. She enjoys interacting and working with him, as well as spending time with him, but for a time she was also traumatized by his other side – the “Crusnik” that lived inside him. It terrified her that someone so gentle and so kind could be … someone else and something so ruthless. For now, she has made her peace with both aspects of his being and their relationship is (mostly) back to normal; however, it is foreseeable in the future that any interaction with him in his Crusnik form will be very strained.
ABILITIES: Not applicable. Esther is no more or less skilled than an average human being and possesses no magical, supernatural, or technological abilities / powers.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
“Father?”
Esther called at first, trying to keep her voice slightly low. You never knew what you might disturb in this place! Not to mention she was supposed to be meeting that priest here anyway, so he ought to already be here! Unless he was late, as usual. Which wouldn’t be surprising…. in fact, that was extremely likely. And just thinking that he might be late, even though this was something of great importance, made her temper spike violently. She wasn’t inclined to wait here long, not even for him. She’d much rather retreat to the safety of her room. She hadn’t been in the castle long enough to trust that the corridors were safe for anyone to wander around.
“FATHER!”
Obviously annoyed now, though she’s still wearing her “hi, my name is Esther and I am an innocent nun” face. ”That foolish, silly, absent-minded idiot of a priest.. where has he gone off to now? He was the one who arranged this meeting, anyway!” Her thoughts are understandably a bit angry, but only because she isn’t panicking enough to consider the alternative that he might be in trouble. Though, if he’s not late because he’s absentminded, it’s a pretty fair bet that Father Nightroad is most definitely in trouble.
Just like he will be when he actually does show up and has to face one peeved nun.
Perhaps … it hadn’t been him she was speaking to. After all, she’d barely figured out how to use that silly book she’d been writing in. Perhaps it was possible for someone else to impersonate the priest and convince her to meet him here and this was all a trap. It would be just like her to go along unquestioningly until the very last second. Gritting her teeth and fisting her hands, Esther glanced over her should warily. Dammit! She would not fall for this bullshit, not here, not like she did at home!
“FATHER, COME OUT RIGHT THIS SECOND… OR I WILL SHOOT YOU.”
That ought to get his (and anyone else’s) attention. Not that she has a gun or anything. It was all just a bluff, anyway.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
[ She doesn’t believe in this nonsense. How could she? Something like .. writing into a journal was so innocuous – it couldn’t be a means of communication. It certainly didn’t make any sense! But … on that train of thought; what about this place made sense? She was in a huge castle that somehow knew her name. Right.]
My name is Esther Blanchett.
[She can’t help it, she’s speaking under her breath as she pens the words carefully into the book. Her handwriting is neat, though a little cramped. Will someone answer back?]
I’d like to know where I am and under whose authority I am being held here. If possible I would like to be returned to Londinium as soon as possible. It is very important that I am returned home.
[There! Not too accusatory, but definitely not mild, either. Settling back in her chair, she stared at the book in front of her, willing words to appear. She would figure this out. And she would go home. It was all a matter of time.]
INTENT: I wanted to join Paradisa, initially because it has some castmates and because I’ve heard great things about the game and I chose Esther because she was my newest and strongest muse. However! I’d love for Esther to eventually break over the fact that she is unable to send her friends home and protect them, as well as explore relationships she might form with other characters in the game, in her cast and outside of it!
